COUNCIL ON
NATIONAL POLICY (CNP)

The CNP (Council on National Policy) is an organization formed by members of the Religious Right, right-wing politicos and powerful members of the American business community.

It is no accident that these are precisely the same three groups which have historically fostered a belief in conspiracism - specifically, the Illuminist Myth, each for its own reasons: the business community as a means of defense against unionism, the Religious Right as a defense against "atheistic socialism," and the Political Right against "one-world universalism." The organization was founded by Tim LaHaye, a prominent leader in the Religious Right. Indeed, it would not be an unfair characterization to list Tim LaHaye's prominence in the Religious Right as second only to that of Pat Robertson's.[1] T. Cullen Davis, Nelson Bunker Hunt - a known financial backer of the John Birch Society[2] - and Joseph Coors were instrumental in helping LaHaye form the CNP. It conceives of itself as a rightist alternative to the Council on Foreign Relations and the Tri-Lateral Commission which right-wingers over the years have accused of being a part of the Illuminist Conspiracy.

Newsweek Magazine reports that CNP's first executive director, Louisiana State Representative Woody Jenkins, told members, "I predict that one day before the end of this century the Council (meaning the CNP) will be so influential that no President, regardless of party or philosophy, will be able to ignore us or our concerns or shut us out of the highest levels of government."[3]
